Well, it happened. I got my first negative mark on Mercari. Not bad, considering I have 265 ratings. There’s always that one inexperienced person that has no idea how the process works though and dang nappit, I had to find one.
So this chic bought two vintage Minnie and Mickey Mouse ornaments from me. They even had the original boxes. I inspected them and then wrapped bubble wrap around the boxes. Then, I put them in a larger box and off they went.
When the girl received them, she rated me immediately. That’s usually a great sign. I mean, if there was a problem, wouldn’t someone contact you first? One would think.
But no. She rated me a blue sad face because Minnie was broken. What she didn’t know was that she could have received her $26.00 back, had she just contacted me before jumping the gun.
I believe that many Mercari users are often times mislead from their prominent, “All Sales Final” rule. However, if you read the fine print, they do offer returns. For instance, they allow returns for items that were damaged or if someone didn’t receive an item that was “as described” before they purchased it.
But once you submit a rating, then nothing can be returned. That’s what they mean by “All Sales Final”.
While you can’t return something just because you changed your mind, you DO have options if you receive something damaged or not at all what you ordered. I have returned two different things via Mercari. One item was damaged and the other was something that I did not order. A seller sent me Pokemon cards when I ordered a Looney Tunes salt and pepper. She mistakenly mixed up the orders. It was a very easy process and I received a full refund– no questions asked via Mercari.
So, if you do have an honest reason for a return, here is how you do it:
- Contact the seller ASAP. This is out of courtesy so that the seller knows why you haven’t rated them yet. It’s easy to return things through Mercari but it can take up to several days for it to be completed.
- Copy & paste the Item ID # of the item that you wish to return.
- Go to the Help Center, Contact Us, Return Request, Start New Conversation.
- Paste your item ID and explain why you are requesting a return.
- Take photos of the item you received. Hit “Send”.
- Patiently wait for a response from Mercari.
Hopefully, this will save honest sellers from receiving unfair negative feedback. I also hope that it helps buyers receive their money back if they have received a damaged item or item that was not as described.
I see many people freaking out about how Mercari takes so long to respond. From what I understand, they do their best but must be short staffed. My only advice if for you to have patience. They will get to you.
